American Heritage Dictionary

Connect to: American Heritage Dictionary

Purpose The American HeritageŽ Dictionary (AHD) is one of the primary sources available to describe current American use of the English language. In addition to standard entries, the AHD includes many entries for relatively new words (like call waiting, latte or AZT), biographical entries, and entries for institutions of higher education, including mailing addresses.

Many entries in the AHD include lists of synonyms, usage notes, or examples of usage taken from published works of well-known writers.

No part of this database may be reproduced or otherwise used without prior written permission from the publisher unless such use is expressly permitted by applicable law.

Dates Covered

AHD also provides entries for many Indo-European root words, showing relationships among words going back over several thousand years.
