Emergencies

Fire Procedures

When the fire alarm sounds all must leave the building immediately. A supervisor in Access Services will announce evacuation procedures over the public address system. Move quickly but carefully to the nearest exit, using the stairway at either end of the building. Do not use the elevators in times of emergency. Help any handicapped who might be in the building, as long as you are not jeopardizing your own safety and security. If you cannot help the handicapped person out of the building try to get the person in the stairwell and report the location of the person to the fire personnel as soon as you get out of the building.

When you have left the building, go a safe distance (50 feet or more) away from it and wait until Campus Police or a Building Manager gives the OK to return. Do not block access roads.

Tornado Procedures

When a tornado alert is issued the Montgomery County Tornado Alert Siren, located on the roof of St. Joseph’s Hall, will be sounded. Alternative signals might include campus patrol car sirens and P.A. systems, telephone notification, and local radio or TV warnings.

When the tornado warning has sounded proceed immediately to seek shelter on the ground floor - east end of the Library, outside rooms 11, 12, 13, and 14 and in rooms 8, 9, and 10. Do not use the elevators. Sit down in these areas, protecting your head especially your eyes, in folded arms until the emergency has passed.
